Throwing Shade on ... Ourselves?

A multimedia project which combines science, technology and design

Multimedia can be used to convey complex content, especially from the world of science, in a much more vivid way. Unfortunately, this potential is still underutilized by the media, mainly due to the high technical hurdles involved.  For our story, we chose the topic of solar geoengineering, a series of methods aimed at artificially reducing the amount of solar radiation reaching the Earth. It would be desirable if this worked, but it's not that simple: the methods are controversial, sometimes risky, and it is completely unclear who should decide on their application.

Making of

Together with Yvonne Wahlensieck and Philipp Bornhauser from Visual Minds, we created our first scroll story on the topic of geoengineering.

The storyboard was developed in close collaboration with Yvonne. It was based on the script she wrote.
It turned out to be quite difficult to filter out the important things and only present them visually.

Fun fact: If we had added everything we had sketched out at the beginning, the article would probably have been twice as long, even after we had divided the story into three different parts.

The illustrations, which were created in Procreate, were drawn with a watercolor pencil to give them a unique look. They are designed to appeal to both younger and older generations and to be understandable to a wide audience.

One of the biggest challenges with this project was the format of our assets and animations. We knew from the beginning that we would be publishing our story on both desktop and mobile devices. This meant we had to constantly ensure that our assets were responsive and worked well on both formats. As you can see on the left-hand side, this didn't always work very well. We had to supplement our assets several times.
Our drawn elements animated in After Effects and small frame-by-frame animations come together to form our wonderful geoengineering scroll story.

Assets, assets, assets !

CH Media asked us directly to summarize our story in an infographic. This was published in the Aargauer Zeitung newspaper on a double page spread. We implemented some of the methods mentioned above.
